Malaysia transport - Well maintained roads

Malaysia Transport - West Malaysia

Whether you're travelling on our bite-sized Malaysia tours or suggested holidays in Malaysia, you'll find that Malaysia transport offers the level of comfort you might find in western Europe, but with Asian charm and appeal.

Roads in Malaysia are exceptionally well-maintained, especially on the west coast. This means that it is quite easy and comfortable to travel by mini-bus or bus. we recommend doing the trip to Taman Negara by bus.

We arrange private transfers for travel on the east coast as you'll probably only be travelling very short distances before heading off to tropical islands. By combining the local bus and private transfers, you'll keep your Malaysia trip interesting and you'll experience the best that the country has to offer.

Malaysia transport options...

Malaysia transport - Friendly transfers

Malaysia transport - Buses are well organised

Malaysia transport - Domestic flights can make long journeys a lot quicker

Malaysia transport - Boat trip

Malaysia transport - A limited rail network

Private transfers
We suggest travelling by bus on the west coast. Travelling this way on the east coast is less efficient since there are more roads travelling inland while you'll be Island hopping there. That's why we suggest travelling with a driver during your time here. Our drivers speak English well and will gladly tell you fun facts about Malaysia during your ride. This will cost you somewhere between £20 and £80 per person, depending on the distance.

Bus
Bus transport on the west coast is very well arranged. Buses here are quite comfortable and have air conditioning. We can make arrangements for you to travel by bus prior to your arrival. From Kuala Lumpur, buses ride to Malacca, Singapore, Taman Negara, the Cameron Highlands and Penang. Buses also ride daily between the island of Pangkor and Penang.

Domestic flight
The best way to travel between Penang and the east coast is to fly. We can book this flight for you prior to your arrival in Malaysia. At the end of your trip you can fly back to Kuala Lumpur from Langkawi or the east coast. Air Asia is the most commonly used airline. Keep in mind that you can bring along no more than 15kg per person on domestic flights. You'll be charged approximately £2 for each additional kilogramme.

Boat
The only way to travel to the small tropical islands off the coast is by boat. These are usually smaller sized boats that can take you to the smaller islands quickly. Most boat rides take approximately 30-45 minutes. If you travel to the Taman Negara, you'll sail on a genuine wooden jungle boat which takes approximately 2hrs to transferred you from Kuala Tembeling to your resort in Kuala Tahan.

Train
Malaysia has a limited railway network from south to north. It's not the quickest means of transport, since the train will stop at most train stations along the way, but we feel it is well worth including during your trip as the train is an enjoyable means of transport. You can travel by train on the route from Singapore to Malacca (Tampin) or Kuala Lumpur. We can make arrangements for you to travel by train if you wish.

Malaysia Transport: Getting around in Borneo...

Borneo's landscape is dominated by tropical rainforest and most areas can only be reached by plane or cars/ minibuses. For most of our bite-sized Borneo tours, we arrange transport on domestic flights. These flights are operated by Malaysian Airlines and Air Asia.

For tours which are located in close proximity of each other, such as our Borneo adventure at Bako National Park and our Borneo visit in Sarawak, we use private transfers. Our chauffeurs know exactly where they're going and they will arrange transport from door to door. You'll also sail through jungle rivers in small wooden jungle boats. The most valuable means of transport on Borneo are your two feet. While hiking through national parks, you'll experience the most secluded areas while searching for orangutans and proboscis monkeys.
