Island hopping Perhentian and Lang TengahOur Malaysia island hopping trip is probably the best way to combine the islands of the north-east coast. Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Lang Tengah are quite similar in terms of landscape, with bleached white beaches fringed by swaying palm trees and a clear blue sea and spectacular coral reefs teeming with colourful underwater life. The difference between the two islands lies in their popularity and development. Perhentian is the most developed with lots of restaurants, bars and activities whereas Lang Tengah is more quiet and idyllic. On your Malaysian island hopping trip you’ll get a taste of both, spending the first three nights on Pulau Perhentian and the last two on the peaceful island Lang Tengah. |

Day 1: Kuala Besut - Pulau PerhentianStarting point of this Malaysia island hopping itinerary is the jetty of Kuala Besut, 1 hour's drive from Kota Bharu. The boat to Pulau Perhentian Besar leaves Kuala Besut every half hour between 8am – 4pm and the crossing takes just 30 minutes. Stepping ashore on Perhentian Besar you’re be greeted by palm trees, bleached white sands and a crystal clear turquoise sea. You’ll be staying in a charming resort on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island which its own coral reef which is terrific for snorkelling. In the evening you can have dinner at the resort, or try one of the nearby restaurants. We had a great meal at the Panorama restaurant on Long Beach which will appeal to movie buffs as well. |

Days 2 and 3: Pulau PerhentianToday, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then wander over to the white beach in front of the resort to find a spot in the soft white sand. The palm trees softly rustling in the wind, the soothing sound of the waves lapping on the beach and the warm sun tickling your skin...life couldn’t be more perfect. You could just lie here for the rest of the day, but if you want a little more activity, take an afternoon snorkelling trip. If you book a half-day trip you can pick up your snorkel, mask and flippers in the morning and snorkel around the reef in front of the resort to spot the most exotic brightly coloured fish swimming among the coral. At the resort reception you can also book a jungle tour (approximately £4), hire a canoe (£1-2 an hour), or a sea-fishing excursion (approximately £52 for 5 hours). |
Day 4: Pulau Perhentian - Pulau Lang TengahTravel time: approximately 2 hoursAfter breakfast it's time to take the boat and island hop to your next Malaysian tropical paradise. As you approach the island you’ll understand why it’s called the island for nature lovers; white sands, crystal clear blue sea and tall, waving palm trees. It’s almost too cheesy to be true, but probably exactly how you’d pictured your perfect tropical island getaway. You’ll be staying in a one of a row of four bungalows in the tasteful well-maintained resort. The Malaysian dishes, particularly the fresh fish are amazing which is just as well as there aren’t really any other restaurants on the island. |

Day 5: Pulau Lang TengahIn the morning, head to the lovely beach in front of the resort and feel the soft, warm sand between your toes. Later on, take a walk along the beautiful shore line. In front out you the clear blue sea beckons, behind you the dense green jungle awaits. It’s probably the only choice you’ll need to make while you’re on Lang Tengah but seeing as you’ll be here for two whole days you could actually do both. For less than £3 you can book a jungle trip with Daniel, who works at the resort or a half-day snorkelling trip for around £5-6. |
Day 6: Pulau Lang Tengah - MerangToday it’s time to bid farewell to your tropical paradise and take the boat back to Merang after breakfast. You could always plan a couple of extra days on Lang Tengah or Perhentian, or visit the islands in reverse depending on your itinerary. If you fancy experiencing something more cultural after all that idyllic sand and sea you can spend a couple of days as part of a local kampung community in Creative kampung Life, or hop on a plane to Penang for a taste of Malaysian city life and some of the best food in the country. Malaysia island hopping: Travel tipsBest time to travelMarch – mid October. Most resorts on Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Lang Tengah are closed from mid-October - February due to the monsoon season. Money matters There are no cash machines on the islands so make sure you withdraw plenty of cash on the mainland. Most resorts and diving schools accept credit cards. Alcohol The more traditional east coast Malaysians don’t always appreciate the use of alcohol by tourists, though on the islands, the larger resorts and a couple of restaurants alcohol is available. When you’re in public, please respect the locals and their values. |
