Malaysia car hireProton boleh! Malaysia is extremely proud of the Proton, a car brand produced exclusively in Malaysia. Nearly everyone here drives one, from businessmen in the Kuala Lumpur traffic jams to entire families squashed into a car driving across the kampung. If you’re planning on driving in Malaysia, it’ll probably be in a Proton. They’re actually excellent cars, with air-conditioning and plenty of leg room and a large boot. In Malaysia they drive on the left so it’s just like back home. For a 2-3 week trip around Malaysia you’ll only need a hire car for a couple of days. Most people prefer spending the first few days acclimatising in Kuala Lumpur before travelling on to Taman Negara, which is reputed to be the oldest rainforest in the world. This leg of the trip is best to do by bus and boat so you don’t need to navigate the frenzied traffic yourself. |

After Taman Negara it’s worth taking the car. You’ll find your hire car waiting for you in the port of Kuala Tembeling. Head inland to the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands before continuing on to the tiny island of Pangkor or the temples of Penang where your car will be picked up at your hotel. If you’re ending your trip with a couple of days on a tropical beach you won’t be using your Malaysia hire car anyway, so it makes sense to drop off the car beforehand. Essentially, as part of a Malaysia itinerary you’ll probably be hiring a car for just 4-5 days, just for that part of the route which is most fun and efficient to do by car. GPS is included in our car hire price, just to help you find all your destinations without having to rely solely on complicated directions and maps. Driving distancesWhen travelling around Malaysia by car driving distance may be small, you’ll still spend a lot of time getting from one place to the next. Driving from Taman Negara to the Cameron Highlands takes around 5-6 hours, even though it’s only 185 miles. Most of the larger towns and cities are linked by dual carriageways and motorways but for the rest it’s mainly (paved) country roads and winding mountain roads. On average you’ll be driving around 4 hours a day, but don’t let that put you off; we think driving is one of the best things about a Malaysia trip because you really ge to experience the country up-close. Our travel specialists will be happy to give you more detailed information about your personal route so you can plan how many hours you’ll be driving every day. We’ll also help you choose the most suitable hire car. The Proton Wira is the standard car for travelling with 2-3 people. Below we’ve listed the various car categories we can currently offer. The cars are provided by our local agent in Malaysia, a reliable organisation with a good fleet of cars.
