Lazing around on Langkawi

The tropical, easy to reach island of Langkawi is an paradise of soft white beaches, swaying palm trees, blue sea and lots of good restaurants. There’s lots to do on Langkawi, although doing stuff might not be what you had in mind at all.

There are interesting museums, you can take a cable car to the top of one of the highest hills of the west coast or go snorkelling in the waters off the little islands around Langkawi. You’ll be staying in a cosy, authentic hotel on Pantai Cengang Beach, one of the two most popular beaches on Langkawi. Day 1: Arrival on Langkawi

From Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the mainland or from Penang you’ll travel by boat (price not included) to the island’s ‘capital’ Kuah. Your beach resort is in a lovely location on Pantai Cenang Beach, one of the two most popular beaches on Langkawi. The resort offers lots of activities like jungle tours, sunrise and sunset cruises, snorkelling / kayaking/ fishing trips and boat trips to the surrounding islands but perhaps the first (and only) thing you want to do is just laze about.

Langkawi island is famous in Malaysia for its good restaurants so there are plenty of options for dinner. The beautiful Bon Ton Restaurant just north of Pantai Cenang has an amazing view and the fusion food is delicious. You’ll need to take a taxi, but it’s worth the ride. On the east side of the island (from Kuah towards Padang Lalang) there's unforgettable Barn Thai, hidden away in the mangroves. Every evening there’s a Pasar Malam (market) on Langkawi, just ask at the hotel which village has a market that day. At the market, you can try freshly grilled satay, corn cobs, sweet ‘kuih’ and other Malaysian specialities.

Day 2 and 3: Langkawi Island

You can spend the next two days chilling out on the beach, but if you want to do something a little more active you can try catamaran sailing or kayaking. Further inland, you can take a cable car (approximately £2) to the top of the Gunung Mat Chingchang, the second highest mountain on Langkawi, rising up from the dense green rainforest. If you want to discover the underwater world without getting wet, visit the aptly named Underwater World in Pantai Cenang, one of the largest aquariums in Asia. You can also take a snorkelling trip to one of the nearby islands, visit one of the museums or go hiking to the hot springs of Telaga Air Hangat.

Day 4: Langkawi Island - End of trip

After check out (until end of the morning) you’ll be transferred to the airport. If you’d like to stay on Langkawi a bit longer just let us know on your quote request form and we’ll book a couple of extra days for you.

Travel Tips

Best time to travel
Like the rest of the west coast, Langkawi Island is fine to visit all year round. The east coast monsoon does pass over the island in April – October but it’s nowhere near as heavy as in the east.

Cooking
Want to try your hand at preparing those delicious Malaysian dishes you've been enjoying? Then try a cooking lesson at the Datal resort. Just ask at tour resort reception for more information. You'll need to book at least one day in advance.

Food
The island speciality is Mee Gulong, fried noodles with finely chopped prawns, beef, chicken, carrot and cauliflower rolled into a kind of pancake and covered in sauce. The Bon Ton restaurant in Pantai Cenang has fantastic views and great fusion food and is just a short taxi ride from your hotel. Alternatively, try an unforgettable evening in Barn Thai, hidden away in the mangrove forest. Also sample the Malaysian snacks at the Pasar Malam, the evening market held daily in different villages across the island (ask at reception for market locations on that day).

Action...
In the north of Langkawi you'll find the Pantai Rhu, a beautiful little bay with a sparkling white beach and a cave where you can hire canoes and boats. Further west, at Pantai Kok you'll find the Telaga Tujuh, or 'Seven Wells' where you can follow a hiking trail to a waterfall that crashes down 330ft into seven small pools. For a real thrill, try the 'air trekking experience' (approximately £26), a challenging adventure course high above the ground. Further south is the Langkawi Bird Paradise (admission approximately £3). You can also take a snorkelling or diving boat trip to one of the nearby islands.

Sights & attractions
In Pantai Cenang in the southwest visit the Langkawi Underwater World, one of the largest aquariums in Asia and the Muzium Laman PADI where you can find out everything there is to know about growing rice. In the north the Ibrahim Hussein Museum (approximately £3 admission) houses the works of famous Malaysian artists.

Pulau Payar
You can visit this island on a day trip and go snorkelling or diving along the beautiful reef. Introductory dives are also available. Take note: underwater visibility is poor from July – September.

Paradise Islands of the Trang Archipelago (Thailand)
A more low-key alternative to the popular Langkawi are the tropical islands of the Trang Archipelago in south-west Thailand.
